As an audio professional, you have plenty of remote control tools at your disposal — but are they really built to meet the demands of real-time audio mixing? Unlike general-purpose solutions, RemoteMix is purpose-built for remote audio control, offering the specialized features and performance you need to mix with precision and confidence.
Ready to mix your audio remotely? Check out our RemoteMix page to learn how easy it is to control your mixer from anywhere.
Remote access and control has become essential for many audio professionals. Whether remotely managing a live stream, a broadcast feed, or a studio session, the ability to adjust a mixer from a distance is not only incredibly valuable, but often a requirement. This leaves many with the choice between a general remote desktop application, like TeamViewer, and a dedicated audio control tool like RemoteMix. Which is the right path for the best outcome?
The answer lies in understanding the core purpose of both options. Remote desktop applications are designed to give you complete control over a computer from a remote location. It essentially mirrors your entire desktop, allowing you to interact with all applications as if you were sitting in front of the machine. This is a powerful capability, but it also comes with certain limitations and risks when applied to audio mixing.
RemoteMix, on the other hand, is built from the ground up for the specific purpose of remote audio control. It establishes a direct connection to your mixer, bypassing the need to navigate through a full desktop environment. This focused approach yields several significant advantages over remote desktop applications.
Think about trying to mix a live event while navigating a messy computer screen displaying a number of competing windows and applications. Now, double this frustration, because you're not only working within your own desktop, but trying to navigate someone else's computer as well. With a dedicated tool like RemoteMix, you get one uncluttered and intuitive interface that allows you to focus entirely on mixing. Everything from faders to EQ settings are presented in a way that's immediately familiar and accessible. This will reduce your cognitive load, lower your stress, and allow you to focus on the technical aspects of your mix, which is what really matters most

For professional remote audio work, reliable and high-quality monitoring is a non-negotiable. RemoteMix is built to prioritize the delivery of audio data, ensuring that what you hear remotely accurately reflects the source, and small changes that you make over time are able to be heard in a crystal clear manner. This dedication to superior audio quality is critical for making informed mixing choices during live events, and is something that remote desktop tools often lack.
Though most remote desktop applications are capable of transmitting audio, many are not optimized for real-time audio delivery and control. If available at all, the quality of audio and video previews are often poor, especially over less stable internet connections. This can make precise mixing difficult, if not impossible. In order to have the best mixing experience, you need your audio signal to be transmitted, replicated, and listened to in as accurate an environment as possible.

Perhaps even more importantly, remote mixing at your best requires an operator to have real-time responsive controls. There are inherent delays with user input when using screen-sharing tools. This type of unwanted latency results in a sluggish and frustrating experience, as if you were trying to type with mittens on or control your mouse using chopsticks. It’s hard if not impossible to pinpoint clicks and maintain accurate drags of virtual control surfaces.
Furthermore, audio preview is an additional concern as many screen sharing tools such as Teamviewer (macOS), Chrome Remote Desktop, or Splashtop (macOS) do not even offer the transmission of audio. When your screen sharing tool doesn't offer audio transmission, you are at the mercy of listening to the live stream at the same delay as your viewers. When audio transmission is offered by the screen sharing tool, it often is an afterthought and lacks the quality needed for accurate mixing.
RemoteMix offers both real-time audio and video previews, allowing you to control your mix live just as if you were sitting behind your soundboard in person. This type of real-time and high quality access is needed for pro-level projects.
RemoteMix’s browser-based nature provides users unmatched flexibility. Whether using a Windows PC, a Mac, or even a tablet, your team can control your mixer with ease. This type of flexibility is particularly valuable for traveling professionals who need to manage their audio from various locations.
Alternatively, setting up remote desktop applications can be a multi-step process, often requiring specific software installations on both computers and involving the configuration of port routing, user access, and sometimes even VPNs for security. This can cause a headache at best, and a mission critical failure at worst if there isn’t time or the right equipment and software access in place before an event.

RemoteMix leverages a dedicated software agent that runs on a computer to establish the connection to the mixer. While this agent is an application, its sole purpose is to facilitate remote mixer control. Since it’s entirely focused on a specific function, it minimizes the potential for conflicts around resource contention compared to a general remote desktop application that allows access to your entire computer. This saves you from having to worry about making sure your entire computer is free of sensitive material that you might not want your audio techs to access.
By isolating the communication between the browser interface and the mixer, RemoteMix reduces the likelihood of interference from other applications and processes that could impact audio performance, and eliminates the risk of sensitive data being shared. This type of dedicated pathway should be a requirement to ensure a more stable and reliable remote mixing experience.
When your remote audio shares a soundboard with your front-of-house (FOH) setup, you really don't want anyone accidentally changing the main sound. RemoteMix lets you handle this by giving you control over who can access the board and what they can do. You can put a PIN on your mixer to keep it safe, and then even limit users to just controlling specific things like an aux send or a matrix mix. This makes sure any remote adjustments only impact the remote feed.
As an admin, you can choose to give certain technicians an all access control, while giving others an all access view but without the ability to choose their mix target, and without access to the mains and buses views. This level of control prevents accidental changes to critical settings, and is simply not an option for more general remote desktop control options.
General remote desktop control tools ironically have limited feature functionality and are simultaneously challenging to use. RemoteMix provides a more straightforward interface that is consistent across a range of different vendor devices. Its usability can be further simplified by grouping a subset of channels into a single group. By grouping a small set of channels into a Virtual Group (commonly known as DCA’s), users can focus on a minimal set of options which both minimizes error and instills confidence. Pared down interfaces are easier to teach and learn, making it so much easier to introduce new concepts in smaller steps.
Another way RemoteMix can simplify your livestreaming audio setup is by completely eliminating the need for an intermediary computer. Our Spark encoder, an embedded computing device purpose-built from the ground up by our engineers specifically for streaming audio and video, streamlines the process. You simply input your audio and video signals into the Spark and connect it to your network. Because the RemoteMix agent is integrated directly within this focused device, you bypass the hassle and ongoing maintenance of yet another general-purpose computer. The Spark's design philosophy is to do a couple of critical things – encoding and streaming – and to perform them exceptionally well.
While remote desktop applications can technically be used to control an audio mixer, RemoteMix provides a more feature rich, user-friendly, and reliable experience for audio professionals. It's the difference between using a general-purpose tool and using a tool designed specifically for the job at hand. When precision, reliability, and efficiency are paramount, a dedicated audio control tool like RemoteMix is the clear choice to achieve a professional audio production, time after time.
