Before we get into the specific questions that came up during the webinar, it's worth pointing out one idea that kept coming up throughout the conversation. It may sound simple, but it's something that's easy to lose sight of because worship and production are often viewed differently than other areas of ministry like preaching, teaching, or pastoral care.
Here’s the big idea: Technology is ministry.
That might sound like a bold statement. After all, how can things like cabling, signal flow, audio consoles, or video switchers be considered ministry in the same way as teaching God's Word?
Because when they're done well, they remove distractions, support authentic worship, and help create an environment where people can encounter Jesus.
That's why the relationship between worship and tech matters so much. Neither exists to serve itself—both exist to serve the mission of the church.
Whether your church is strong in worship leading and light in tech, or has amazing production yet struggles musically, the goal is the same: create an environment where people can clearly hear, clearly participate, and clearly connect with God — both in the room and online. The good news is you don't have to overhaul your entire ministry to make progress in either worship or tech. To break it down, we’ve first provided three simple things you can do starting this week to work towards meaningful growth.
It's easy to settle into familiar routines and make decisions based only on our own perspective. And while experience and expertise are valuable, they can also create blind spots that are hard to recognize on our own.
That's why honest feedback is so important. Invite trusted volunteers, staff members, or fellow leaders to share what they're seeing. Better yet, ask someone who's relatively new to your church. New attendees often notice things the rest of us overlook because they haven't yet become accustomed to the rhythms and routines of your ministry.
Ask a trusted volunteer, staff member, or new attendee:
“What is one thing in our worship or production experience that could improve the congregation’s ability to engage?”
You don’t need a full audit. One honest observation is enough to create momentum.
Ministry is busy. There's always another service to plan, another volunteer to train, another problem to solve, and another item on your to-do list. In the middle of all that, it's easy to let your own growth take a back seat.
That's why it's important to intentionally set aside time to learn. That certainly includes time in God's Word and prayer, but it also means investing in your technical and musical skills. Whether it's reading a book, watching a training video, attending a conference, or learning from another church, continual growth equips you to serve your team and your congregation more effectively.
Schedule 30 minutes this week to learn one technical or worship skill you’ve been avoiding. Don’t wait for an entire free afternoon—it probably won’t come.
Examples:
Every volunteer is at a different stage. Some are brand new and eager to help. Others have been serving faithfully for years. Some are thriving in their current role, while others may be serving in an area that's no longer the best fit.
At the same time, there are likely people in your congregation with gifts that aren't being used at all. Maybe they've never been asked. Maybe they're waiting for someone to recognize their potential.
Whether it's giving a growing volunteer more responsibility, helping someone find a better fit, or simply inviting a gifted person to get involved, a few words of encouragement can make a lasting impact to them AND your team.
Identify one person who could take ownership of a small production task this week:

Some growth can happen quickly, but meaningful growth is often a journey. Everyone's path will look different, but having a plan can help turn good intentions into consistent progress.
Below is an example of a growth plan for someone looking to develop their technical AV leadership skills, but the same approach could be applied to worship leadership or other areas of ministry. The goal isn't to rush through a checklist, but to create realistic opportunities to learn, practice, and grow over time.
Sometimes a simple recommendation is all you need, and we hope this list gave you a few helpful resources and training opportunities to explore. Other times, the best next step is having a one-on-one conversation with someone who can understand your specific challenges, answer your questions, and provide practical guidance.
