Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering is a key member of the BoxCast management team who is responsible for guiding and growing a talented team of engineers, managers, and QA talent that deliver high quality and reliable products loved by our users. While the Director of Engineering is technically credible and can fully understand the detailed ins and outs of what engineers work on, this person is hyper-focused on driving functional excellence with our cross-functional Agile teams. This leader strives to empower individual contributors in the best position to achieve both company objectives and individual contributor career goals. This team leader must excel at delegating and must reinforce the Agile pillars of transparency, adaptation, and inspection. The Director of Engineering will ensure that the delivery train runs on schedule by driving the cadence of our cross-functional, Agile delivery teams through planning activities, scrum of scrums meetings, sprint review/demos, and organizational retrospectives.

  1. Build a great group of engineers
    • Ensure you have the right people in the right seats (right roles)
    • Identify gaps and needs within cross-functional Agile delivery teams and recruit great people
    • Foster a collaborative, team-first culture focused on excellence
    • Provide opportunity for peer recognition and feedback
  2. Guide and develop each team member
    • Establish a trusting relationship with each direct report
    • Understand what motivates each person on your team
    • Grow, mentor, and lead individuals professionally by planning career paths for all direct reports and empowering managers to do the same for their direct reports
    • Praise and criticize directly (with care)
    • Hold staff accountable to deliver a high volume of high-quality work
    • Quickly confront poor-quality work or individual behaviors that are not consistent with the BoxCast company values
  3. Deliver results
    • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy Officer, Director of User Experience, and Director of Product Management to ensure alignment within the product organization
    • Coach engineers on cross-functional Agile teams to deliver high quality products, enhancements, features, and bug fixes
    • Maintain well-crafted architecture amidst rapid growth
    • Ensure that customers continue to be served reliably
    • Hit development milestones and sprint goals
    • Maintain key vendor relationships that are critical to BoxCast as a service (Amazon Web Services, Datadog, and others)
    • Negotiate new vendor relationships for new tools and systems
    • Ensure hardware inventory levels are adequate to serve demand
  4. Embrace and evangelize Agile best practices
    • Ensure that there are healthy, collaborative forums that include engineers/architects, user experience designers/researchers, product owners/managers, program managers, analysts, and people managers
    • Continuously improve Agile delivery team best practices, meetings, and artifacts
    • Help to remove impediments that block one or more Agile delivery teams
    • Evangelize Agile within the product organization and across the company
  5. Work well with leaders across the business
    • Maintain good relationships with internal and external stakeholders
    • Support organizational strategies and objectives
    • Negotiate department and business boundaries and processes
    • Provide input to the Product Management and User Experience teams
  6. Leverage technology trends and tools
    • Stay informed of technologies, tools, and vendors that BoxCast can or should be leveraging in order to improve our technology and product offering
    • Use the best tools and practices to manage efficient response, clarification, and resolution of service escalations
    • Deploy best in practice SaaS software delivery lifecycle techniques and processes such as continuous integration and continuous deployment
    • Collaborate with 3rd party software companies to design, deploy, and test integrations with our SaaS platform

  • 5+ years of experience in management
  • Bachelor's degree in the engineering field
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
  • Proficiency in product design and development life cycle variations over cloud-hosted SaaS, embedded firmware, mobile apps development, OTT/TV apps development, and hardware products
  • Ability to build relationships and drive execution
  • Demonstrated ability to coach others to success
  • Experience leading a high-performing team
  • Action-oriented mindset
  • Ability to engage at C-level to build committed plans and execute on them
  • Experience working in a high-growth, “scale up” environment
  • Experience with AWS and/or other Cloud Infrastructure Providers
  • Understanding of the live streaming ecosystem
