How DeeJ Experience Brings Professional Broadcast Quality to Small-Town Sports

How one radio broadcaster left a steady job to build a streaming operation that now reaches hundreds of thousands of viewers a season.

                          The Challenge

A radio job that only made room for the sports that paid

Scott Lockwood got his start in radio, calling local high school boys football and basketball games because those were the only sports that brought in money. But only giving a platform to a small subsection of student athletes based on top-tier popularity didn’t sit well with him. He wanted to highlight athletes across every age, gender, and sport.

He started shooting video on an iPad and posting it to a Facebook page alongside his radio broadcasts. Even though it was somewhat raw, the value behind what he was doing clicked with his intended audience. In fact, so much momentum built over such a short period of time, that he was able to leave his job and focus on building out a local streaming platform for the schools in his hometown of Corry, Pennsylvania.

At first, no one was paying for him to film girls volleyball. Scott didn’t care, he traveled with the team and broadcasted anyway. Hailing from a smaller town in PA, the Corry girls volleyball team wound up winning the Division 3A title. This was a huge deal, as they were able to take on and overcome larger programs from the greater Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas.

Fueled by all of this momentum and engagement, he knew that he needed to find a more professional experience and platform for his viewers. A tablet broadcasting a single camera to social media wasn’t going to cut it.

                          Objective

Deliver professional-quality coverage of hometown sports and grow community reach

                          Industry

                          Local Sports Broadcasting

                          Products Used

BoxCast Streaming, Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme, Hollyland Wireless

                          The Solution

Pairing real commentary with real video quality

After thorough industry research, the choice was clear and he got up and running with BoxCast in no time. His first broadcast on the platform was of a high school graduation, and he started hearing from viewers: “This is fantastic video quality!”
Along the way, Scott built out a multi-camera production setup around Blackmagic hardware, including a four-channel ATEM Mini for road games and an eight-channel unit for games at home, along with a couple of Blackmagic 6K studio cameras used for his most important broadcasts.

He'd used Roland gear before, but it limited what he could do. Blackmagic let him scale up or down depending on the venue, run sound when needed, and still fit everything into a compact space. On the road, wireless units from Hollyland let his crew roam up to 1,500 feet from his other equipment, as long as they stay in line of sight, which he calls a real game changer for how his team covers games and events that span a great distance, like golf tournaments.

After years and thousands of streamed events, he understands the importance of balance between production and personality.  "The reason DeeJ works is in big part because of our commentary," he said. "But if you don't have the video quality to back that up, you might as well get your phone out and stream." For him, it's the two working together that makes youth sports broadcasts worth watching.

Today, the team covers all home and away games for their home town, ranging from youth sports to senior varsity. DeeJ has also expanded into nearby school districts and surrounding towns, bringing coverage to communities throughout the broader area.

Local businesses fund the operation by sponsoring broadcasts in exchange for ad spots, while a $5 monthly subscription gives fans access to out-of-market games. Last year, this hybrid model attracted a wide range of local sponsors, and the advertiser list continues to grow year over year as businesses see the tremendous reach and engagement the platform offers.

DeeJ Experience covers hometown sports, church services, concerts, graduations, and community events out of Corry, Pennsylvania, a town of about 6,000 people in Erie County.

                          The Results

From a Facebook side project to over 230,000 season views

The numbers during the 25/26 school year speak to how far things have come for Scott and his team. For a town of 6,000 people, DeeJ Experience pulled in over 230,000 views this season alone, from August 2025 through July 2026. This viewership is spread across football at every level, from elementary to varsity, along with volleyball, soccer, golf, track, and basketball, plus special events like sports award banquets and all-star games.

The crew has grown right along with the operation. Scott currently manages four core members, two volunteers, and several on-call staff. While road-game internet availability was once their primary obstacle, a combination of major cellular providers and Starlink has solved that problem. These days, the real challenge is finding enough hands to keep up with demand.

"We've had over 230,000 views for this season alone," Deej said. "The only reason it works is because of commentary paired with the video quality BoxCast helps us deliver. That match is what made it click."

“We got BoxCast in 2017, and the first broadcast we did was a High School graduation. Everyone was like, 'Woah, this is fantastic video quality!' We get those types of comments all the time ever since we switched to BoxCast.”

                          In Summary

Built by someone who never got the chance

Though he had interest early on, Scott never had the opportunity to go to school for broadcasting. Everything he knows, he’s taught himself, and he’s refined his craft over the years by being the man behind the mic in more than a hundred events each year. While he strives for excellence, he remains a realist. By combining top-tier streaming gear with the right team, he’s built an operation that isn't just special – it's sustainable.
