We’ve rated the steps on the basis of complexity and effort. Complexity is how hard the job is to learn. Can you teach it in a two-minute hallway pitch, or does it take a full training session and a few practice runs? Effort is how much ongoing attention it requires. Some jobs take 60 seconds and are done; others require focus for the entire event. Confusing the two is how volunteers end up overwhelmed or bored. Let’s get into it.

Volunteers come in every shape and size, but students bring a unique energy. As full time learners, they spend their days absorbing new ideas and trying out a variety of subjects. If a student shows up to help out with your live stream, chances are they are genuinely curious about video, audio, or event production and want to make a difference while learning a new skill.
The catch? Students can get bored easily if given too little to do, but overwhelmed if given too much. That’s why we wrote this guide: to help you find the sweet spot where volunteers feel empowered, energized, and ready to take on more of your streaming workflow over time.

Low complexity, low effort
Setting up a broadcast only requires four things: a date, time, title, and description. For recurring events like Sunday services or Friday night games, you can set the schedule to repeat automatically.
Want fresh titles and cover images each week? Someone can log in once, change a few fields, and log back out in a few minutes. Start by showing them how to do it, then hand the task over to your volunteer. Because you can always jump in to make necessary edits later, this is a safe, easy task to delegate completely. There’s no need for shadowing here, and no approval step. It’s a simple, low-pressure entry point for a new volunteer.
Hand it off: Week one.
Training: Walk through it once, then let them take the wheel after that.
Low complexity, medium effort
Virtual groups in Mixing Station Anywhere let you collapse a full digital mixer down to just a few controls. Adjusting a single fader moves every assigned channel with it. Instead of hunting for channel 19 mid-song, your student only needs to manage three or four obvious controls - like drums, vocals, or a speaker mic.
This task is low complexity, because you can explain the concept in less than two minutes. It's a medium effort because someone has to be present and listening for the whole event. It demands attention, but not a lot of technical expertise.
Audio mixing often intimidates volunteers, making this role a fantastic confidence booster. While a full mixer can feel overwhelming, adjusting a few clear virtual groups helps them feel empowered right away.

Training: Teach them what each group controls and give them one simple rule for when to adjust it. Stay nearby to answer any questions during the event.

OTT app content management is genuinely fun to explore. Uploading videos, organizing playlists, adding thumbnails, writing descriptions, setting privacy rules, and configuring pay-per-view options aren’t technically hard, and it creates a curated viewing experience that rivals major streaming services. At the same time, reorganizing content and building out a series requires hours of careful, focused effort.
This role is perfect for a student who'd rather work independently than sit in a high-pressure control room during a live event. Assign them a specific batch of videos with a clear deadline, and they’ll easily handle 50-80% of the heavy lifting, allowing you to just step in for final tweaks.
The best part? They’ll get to show their friends and family a polished, professional OTT app that they helped build.
Hand it off: Month one.
Training: A clear naming convention, an image spec sheet, and a written example of a finished entry.
Medium complexity, low effort
Connecting video, audio, and network lines to your encoder is a foundational part of live streaming. Our hardware encoder, Spark, comes in HDMI and HD-SDI versions for video, accepts audio over balanced 1/4 inch or 3.5mm stereo, and connects via Ethernet (or Wi-Fi if you're in a pinch).
Most churches plug it in once and leave it, making this a one-time job. If you're a school and you’re carrying gear to away games or moving between a gym and an auditorium regularly, it's an every-event task.
This task is medium complexity because a student needs to identify each device, map out cable runs, and make sure no one is going to trip over the cables. On the other hand, it’s low effort because once everything is set up correctly, the job stays done.
Hand it off: Week one for a fixed install; Month one if they're packing a road kit.
Training: Label every cable, then have them set it up and tear it down twice with nobody watching the clock.
Medium complexity, medium effort
Graphic overlays display lower thirds, custom images, and sponsor graphics over your stream. You're not firing them constantly, but each one has to be loaded into BoxCast ahead of time and fired at precisely the right moment during the broadcast.
Creating and uploading assets is prep work, while triggering them happens in real time during your event. Missing a sponsor slot is noticeable, and forgetting lower thirds during a service is a missed opportunity, making this the first job with real stakes attached.
Hand it off: Month two.
Training: Have them build the assets first, on their own time, with no live pressure. Triggering comes only after they've built a set and know what's in it.
Medium complexity, high effort
Scoreboard overlay setup and operation can run automatically using our Scoreboard Assist. You can also manage scoreboards manually by building a custom layout with your team colors, text, and sport specific data.
Setup can be completed before the event begins, but live operation requires attention throughout the entire broadcast. While soccer might go 40 minutes without a change, sports like basketball and tennis change every few possessions, requiring continuous focus.
A great perk for volunteers: students can log into your account to update scores in real time from a phone or tablet, anywhere in the venue. The technical skill required is pretty low, as long as the volunteer understands the sport, but the mental stamina required is high. You’ll set up the domain, and create a sitemap, and then once the skeleton is in place, you can bring in students to divide and conquer. Have them embed live stream players and past archives, or mock up a few secondary pages based on templates you’ve created.
You can review their work together in real time, giving them a glimpse into a professional web editing workflow. It’s a rewarding experience that connects their live production work with real-world digital publishing experience.
Hand it off: Month three, as a contributor rather than an owner. Let them build pages inside a structure you set.
Training: You approve the sitemap, and they build parts of it with your guidance.

We don’t build features that are both hard to learn and demanding every single second, because that goes against everything we stand for. Our goal is to make live production as intuitive as possible without sacrificing quality or control.
If your students are itching for something more advanced, you can always look to your physical hardware. Camera operation, live switching, and hands-on production work can get plenty technical. If a student has knocked every other challenge out of the park, introducing hardware controls is a great next step.
